1937年平津沦陷。为保留文脉火种，北方几所大学决定南迁长沙。不久，长沙也战火四起，曾为国立北平大学医学院讲师的孟海棠，护送少年学子去往重庆。护送途中，孟海棠与康揽衫、张啟等一众西南联合大学流亡队伍创建了流亡学校，一路弦歌不辍。海棠与张啟在摩擦中相爱，两人相互扶持，至重庆又发展北大下设的医学院。不久，海棠因故被罢免校职。海棠与张啟西进昆明，在凌康夫妇的见证下成婚，并于蒙自重新发展医学院。 滇缅战役吃紧，海棠与张啟带领部分学生奔赴战场，建立战地医院。在平古战役中，张啟被日军俘虏，自此下落不明。彼时已怀有身孕的海棠为曾家唯一的血脉而流产。1949年海棠、揽杉拒绝了东渡台湾的邀请，留在新生的中国，海棠继续从事教育事业，而康揽衫则继承夫志，从事历史研究。海棠从未停止寻找张啟，三十年后两人才得以团聚。
During the difficult period from 1937 to 1945, two generations of three intellectual families in Peiping make choices and sacrifices in the face of great turmoil and changes of the times.
Some people choose to protect Chinese culture and continue the cultural bloodline. There are both idealists and realistic activists. They try their best to save the nation and survive, and actively search for a way out for the country, and finally head towards the light.
