The players of a virtual reality MMORPG, Aincrad Online, are trapped and fighting for their very lives. After it is announced that the only way to leave the game is by beating it, Kirito—a very powerful swordsman—and his friends take on a quest to free all the minds trapped in Aincrad.
主角桐谷和人是使用NervGear遊玩VRMMORPG《Sword Art Online》的玩家。很幸運的參與過封閉測試，並買了正式版的和人，與正式營運就馬上「完全潛行」的9千5百名玩家一起，享受著正式版的SAO世界。但感動是短暫的，四小時後，和人發現到封測時確實存在的「登出」指令竟然消失。認為只是系統暫時出錯的和人以及開始陷入混亂的所有玩家——也被捲送到開始地點廣場。但頭上傳來的不是等待許久的救障公告，而是自稱SAO遊戲設計者的「茅場晶彥」淡淡開始的死亡遊戲說明：不能登出是遊戲的正常現象，只有打倒位於「艾恩葛朗特」頂樓、第100層的頭目—達成「完全攻略」—才是離開這個世界唯一的方法。
